Blue River National Park, New Caledonia

Two hours south of Noumea to a huge national park, home to 700 odd of the 1500 surviving cagou, a flightless bird the size of a chicken. The park’s usually closed on Mondays but our small tour had permission to enter. No one told the three hunters, though, who roam the park Mondays shooting feral deer, wild pigs, dogs and cats.

The park was incredibly well-maintained, right down to boxes of firewood and fire pits with bench seating.

Some extras if you’re interested: one of the hunters, a cagou, fungi, landscape art, the drowned forest, the breakfast patio at our hotel.

No wifi tomorrow.
