Zermatt, Gornergrat Railway and the Matterhorn

Today we went to Tasch to board the shuttle train into Zermatt which is car free . The journey up to Gornergrat took about 40 minutes and although it was very expensive it was worth it !
The Matterhorn remained with a cap of wispy clouds but was still magnificent. I really liked the view of the nearby glacier which was stunning.
We ate some soup from the cafe and I felt better after a couple of cups of tea!
We went back down- I was thrilled to see so many wonderful wildflowers including gentians and pasqueflower flowers as well as wild pansies . We also spotted some marmots.
In Zermatt we walked up the Main Street to see the older houses so charmingly built with grain stores raised; made of larch they had aged and weathered .
We also took a detour to see the graveyard where so many climbers are remembered- the Matterhorn is one of the most dangerous to climb in the world and 3 or 4 die each year - it was sobering to see the empty plaques awaiting the next victims .
Unfortunately, the Matterhorn Museum didn’t open until 3:0 pm so we had to miss it .
This evening, we had a road train tour of the older parts of Brig on the ‘Simplon Express’ !! It took us to Naters which had an ancient charnel house and lots of other interesting places such as an ancient tree used for village meetings .
