Hagia Sophia

Not the famous one in Istanbul but the Roman Catholic Church for Galston in East Ayrshire. This was one of a number of churches financed by the third Marquis of Bute who had enlarged his fortune by developing Cardiff Docks. This allowed the export of valuable coal from the Welsh valleys.

My friends were stunned to see such a Byzantine structure in the middle of a small Ayrshire town. Later we drove to Ayr via Sorn, Catrine and Mauchline. Not the most direct route but certainly very pretty. Cold wet weather in Ayr pushed us on to Girvan where the sun came out. This gave me the chance to show them the electric brae which quite puzzled them.

Scotland looking at its very best.
