Quarry Bank

An excellent day out exploring this extensive National Trust property.

This is the world of early industrial development through the creation of an enormous cotton spinning and weaving factory on the banks of the river Bollin. Initially the river powered the spinning and weaving machines, later there was steam power followed by hydroelectric power.

Alongside the factory was a village which grew in size to accommodate the workers and an apprentice house where upto 90 children were housed and required to work very long hours.

The place is an education into the beginning of industrial life and the very gradual development of laws relating to fair employment practices. Well worth a visit.
