Winter feed

Every 7-10 days I put out a round bale of lucerne hay for the cattle. There’s still a fair quantity of dry paddock feed, the lucerne is just a supplement to minimise any weight loss in the winter.
Winter feeding in the Valley is a balance - if cattle know they will be fed, they are unlikely to go foraging, especially on the back 100 acres of our farm which is mainly native bush.
I think I might be the human equivalent - I married a great cook and so most of my culinary skills have dissipated over the years.
