Former cotton spinning mills ..

... in the Ancoats district of Manchester.

This section of the Rochdale Canal, in East Manchester, runs alongside Redhill Street which is flanked by some of the oldest cotton spinning mill buildings in the country.

The red brick Royal Mill nearest to the footbridge, was the most recent to be built (in 1912). It was built on the site of one of the McConnel & Kennedy Mills, which were established in 1798. The Royal Mill was originally known as the New Old Mill until its name was changed to mark a visit by the King and Queen in 1942.

The older buildings further along the row include Salvins Factory and the New Islington Mill.

In the past decade the buildings, which had been disused for decades, have been refurbished for commercial and residential use, incorporating many original features.
