ruins

After breakfast we took the bus South one stop to explore the ruins of Prora. Prora was a huge holiday resort built by the Nazis as part of the Strength Through Joy (Kraft durch Freude) programme. It was designed for 20 000 beds along a stretch of 4.5km. Construction was stopped in 1936. After the war the completed buildings were used as barracks by the East German army. Now, one of the buildings is used as a youth hostel (see extra). Although the ruins are fenced in it was fairly easy to bypass the fence to get close. The place is absolutely enormous. We spent a little time exploring. Eventually we took the bus back to Sassnitz and a few trains and 6 hours later we were back in Berlin.

This was our first major trip using the Deutschland Ticket. Not needing to book a train is really nice. But even better is being able to just take any bus without having to figure out fares. You just show your card and that's it.

We really loved our trip to Rügen and I suspect we will be back there regularly.
