Butter head lettuce flower

I kept many of my lettuce plants in place to keep the feral cats out until the watermelon runners take over the bed. It has been fun to watch them start from seedlings to lettuce leaves to long stalks now with flowers. The more advanced ones have puffy seeds like dandelions. The watermelons are advancing, so their days are numbered.

Today was one of those days when everything went wrong. I am grateful to my husband for keeping me sane on days like these. What would I do without him?
