The Pensioner

What’s going on. Sad deaths! Craig Brown, the Scotland manager, Glenda Jackson and now Alan Arkin, memorably Yossarian in Catch-22 and so recently in the wonderful Kominsky method.
And France! A youngster of Algerian extraction was shot dead by police, kicking off days of rioting, burning down town halls and libraries as well as torching hundreds of cars and buses. It’s a powderkeg, that France. Apparently of the 39 people killed by police there last year, 13 were drivers who were shot for failing to comply with stop orders. I don’t think many were Brits on their way to their houses in Provence.
Talking of cars, I spent an inordinate amount of time getting a new insurance policy; the nice people at Admiral decided to hike our policy by 50%. And later, after howking up one of the spiny plants up the path, we sat out and finished those Sunday papers.
