A wee visit to the very private grounds of Boturich Castle near Balloch for my Commonwealth War Graves Commission volunteering.

Robert Scott Findlay whose parents owned Boturich Castle was a Captain in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and was sent to France and Flanders in February 2015  and took part in the second battle of Ypres. On 10th May he was hit by three pieces of shell but after his wounds were dressed he returned to the fire trench and took command and held the position until relieved the following morning.

He was given four days leave and was travelling home by the overnight sleeper when he was killed in the Gretna train disaster on 22 May 1915 aged 28. This is still the worst train crash in British history.

Always seems ironic that having survived the horrors of the trenches he was killed in a train crash.

Lest we forget.
