On the first Saturday of June, the people of Bathgate celebrate the town becoming a free burgh in the early 1800's. Alexander Marjoribanks was the town's owner and he voluntarily gave up this posistion. He was subsequently elected as Bathgate's first Provost and fought to secure money left to the people of the town, in the will of John Newland (a rich sugar-planter). The money was used to build the first Bathgate Academy in Marjoribanks Street and the parade begins from that spot every year.
