Holgate Windmill

This 5-storey tower windmill is York's last surviving and the oldest 5-sailed windmill in the country.

Built between 1770 and 1792 it occupies a site on which mills have stood since the C15 and is now fully restored and, twice a week, mills wheat and spelt, both available in the shop on the ground floor.

We were shown round by volunteer Richard Green, who also made several models of types of mill, the largest being of Holgate mill showing each floor and its function.

I recommend a visit but do check opening times - though if you see the sails turning, it's open!
