Keep off!!

One of the problems we’ve always had with the fat block feeders was being raided by starlings.  This year the rooks have found us.

The rooks break down the block until its in small enough pieces to get through the grid of the feeder, then fly off with the big bits.  I experimented with winding some garden wire through the lower parts (see here – I couldn’t be fagged to remove the garden wire when I upgraded) but that made little difference – so . . .

Today I had the brainwave (this time it waived hello and not just goodbye) of using some of the mesh sheet left over from making the fruit cage last year.  The gaps are very much smaller than the feeder.

So here you have it, only time will tell.  It may not stop the rooks all together but it will slow them down, and it’s not going to do a lot to stop the starlings, we’ll just have to keep shouting . . .
