Cat's Paw

Thorn

We stopped in the layby near Plaistow, West Sussex on the way back from a visit to Mrs Catspaw's parents, to stretch our legs and for me to photograph the sunset (the first of today's 'Extras'). It was then Mrs Catspaw noticed a yellow moth taking in the warmth from the bonnet of our car: today's other 'Extra' is what is generally called a 'reference shot', taken in a hurry in order to record and hopefully identify the subject: in this case, we think it must be a species of Thorn moth (Ennomos sp.), but any more precise identification would be welcome.

The moth then fluttered down into the gap between the bonnet and the windscreen, where it features in today's main photograph.

It flew off and up into the overhanging tree canopy before we finally set off on the last leg of our journey home.
