The fellow wearing a cowboy hat and holding a rifle is Robert Vander Plaats (1949-2013). He obtained his PhD at York University. In 1979, he suffered a breakdown that led to a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Vander Plaats turned to art as a means of therapy.
