The Mercat Cross

Fraserburgh Mercat Cross in Saltoun Square. The Square was formed 1801 from Kirk Green when the area was the centre of trade in the burgh. The carved head of the cross has the Royal Arms of Scotland on the hidden side - the south side -  seen in the photograph has the Arms of the United Kingdom and is a replica  of the original dating from 1988. The Arms are framed by a lion and unicorn. Originally the cross stood on the now demolished tolbooth.
