Every day is a schoolday. Was looking at oak trees in the park checking out the developing acorns when I saw this. At first I wondered if someone had glued them on as a wind-up but Mr Google says oak apple or oak gall. Apparently caused by chemicals injected by the larva of certain kinds of gall wasp. Used to produce ink from at least Roman times right through to relatively modern times.
