The Well of the Lecht

The Well.of the Lecht is a small natural spring by the A939 opposite the turning for the Lecht Mine. It is marked by what was once a white stone slab recording that in 1754 five companies of the33rd Regiment commanded by Colonel Charles Hay constructed the road ' from here to the Spey'. This military roadwas part of the government's post- Culloden attempt to subdue the Highlands by improving communications and enabling troops to be moved around quickly. 'The well is small but the undertaking large' (Ian Shepherd)

Despite the murkiness of the well a cheerful red enamel mug is now chained to the rock inviting travellers to drink from it.
