Anatole's blips

Ward Hill

Well Orkney is all very nice but when it comes to hills there is not a lot of choice. We have been staring out the kitchen window at the largest which we have saved for the best weather day. Off on the first ferry to Hoy from Stromness, we walked up the road from the quay to the ‘Dwarfie Stane’. After taking a brief look inside at the exquisitely carved twin chamber interior, we clambered up the steep hillside to the shoulder and up to the top of Ward hill (481m). Down the steep western side to Loch Sandy and back to catch the ferry home after a cup of tea at the cafe. Very civilised and satisfactorily footsore.

Of course, this photo is from the top where you get the best views on Orkney. North over Grimsey and Scapa Flow. South you can see the whole of the north coast of Scotland from JoG and Dunnet head practically all the way to Cape Wrath.
