Stan and the horse troughs

Stan has been retired for nearly 20 years as senior gardener at Starbank Park, where he still lives in a tied house.

He has not lost his green touch and when I commented on the "plant pots" he was tending he informed me that they were originally the horse troughs at Edinburgh City Council Broomfield "pay as you play" golf course for the grass cutting gang stabled there in 1938. The club re-opened after the war, renamed Silverknowes Golf Course, and when the horses were replaced by a tractor the troughs were moved to Starbank and planted up.
