Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Echoes of the glory days.

In the past our river, the Ythan, was navigable to small coastal steamers. They brought coal, lime and fertiliser from northern England and unloaded their cargo at the village quay. They then filled up with local oats, wheat and barley to be exported back to the south.
The navigable channel in the river was regularly dredged and marked with these stout wooden posts.
