Meadowsweet

We took a wander around Brodgar looking at wildflowers. Or in the case of the eyebright it was more of a crawl but it is looking superb at the moment. It’s been a bumper year for the Meadowsweet in the pic. The scent of it and the bonnie purple heather filled the air today.

Vikings used meadowsweet to clarify and flavour their mead. I think the name comes from that rather than meadows. Apparently it’s delicious and can be used to flavour lots of things like puddings and makes a great cordial ( for which I now have a recipe but not tried it yet) and is great for all sorts of ailments such a rheumatism.
