A Turn For The Better

The weather has taken a turn for better so we did a walk along the banks of the Tyne at Newburn and then a walk along the former Wylam Waggonway - a 5 mile waggonway built in 1748 to transport coal from Wylam colliery to the staiths at Lemington ready for shipping down the Tyne.  The wagons were initially pulled by oxen until they were replaced by some of the earliest steam locomotives.

In 1972 the railway tracks were removed and a public bridleway was created.  It's now a very lovely place to walk or ride bikes and horses.
