Feral animals

*** trigger warning for the second extra for those who might be a bit sensitive.
Yesterday I found a dead wild dog in the bush at the back of our farm and informed Local Land Services as requested so today I had a visit from Annaliese and Mitchell from the LLS.
The main blip is of A checking one of the cameras we have at strategic points around the farm checking for feral pigs, wild dogs and deer. The first extra shows Mitchell replenishing our pig trap with some more bait (boiled wheat and molasses). The second extra shows A collecting DNA samples from the dog (tips of both ears).
I had a good look at the dog to determine a cause of death but there were no obvious external marks. It looked a very strong, middle aged male, probably a large kelpie cross. Now that’s not the Scottish Kelpie, ours is a working dog!! Likely causes would be snake bite (unusual for August in Oz), a well aimed kick from a kangaroo or cow, or maybe parvovirus. Fortunately they didn’t ask me to perform an autopsy as he’s been in the sun for a few days!
As a rural landowner, I have frequent dealings with the LLS, National Parks and the Blue Mountains Council. The LLS is a friendly, helpful, approachable organisation willing to use common sense as a starting point - I can’t say any of that about the other two organisations!!
