Thick knees

Some years ago Council fenced off an exclusion zone here on a promontory on Brisbane Water, to preserve habitat for migratory birds and for Bush Stone-Curlews. When the tide is low you can walk around the promontory, which is how we discovered the zone. Judging by the state of the notices and fences, it has lain neglected for some time.

I have never seen, or indeed heard of, bush stone-curlews. Google tells us they are largely nocturnal, and are listed as endangered in NSW. They  are somewhat homely in appearance, they are not actually curlews, and their call is described as a 'whistling scream'. Their other common name is Bush Thick-Knee. One way and another, they don't seem to have a lot going for them.
