Blackbird

Yes, this is your common or garden European blackbird (Turdus merula), which was introduced into Melbourne in the 1850's, no doubt by some homesick immigrant, who wanted to be reminded of home. It was originally confined to Melbourne and Adelaide, but has very slowly spread throughout south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania. They tend to mate up in early winter to build their nest, and will breed in early Spring.

We usually get one pair nesting somewhere in the garden each year, but they are incredibly shy - much more so than EmyJane's friend, Elgar.

This was taken from the deck latish this afternoon. I've never blipped a blackbird before, and it's another species to add to my backyard list.
