Beautiful stranger

Out hacking the jungle pruning the garden this afternoon and this bug appeared on the tree as Louisa was trimming it.

"What is it? Is it some kind of bee?"
"I have no idea, it's stripey at least." 

Turns out it's (probably) a hornet mimic overfly.
