Sgwarnog: In the Field

Fox

Grandad Fox is one of several pieces by Sheffield artist Pete McKee dotted about Stocksbridge, a steel town in the Little Don valley about ten miles to the north west of the city. The fox and umbrella is a nod to industrialist Samuel Fox who invented and produced the steel paragon umbrella frame here.

Up the hill I was visiting Bracken Moor Stadium, the ground of Stocksbridge Park Steels. It was FA Cup day, and Cleethorpes Town were the visitors (extra). A direct free kick deep into added time saw the Lincolnshire team progress. Stop 42 on my slow tour of all the semi-pro and pro football grounds in Yorkshire.

Earlier, I’d spent the morning in the galleries of Sheffield enjoying ‘Donkey Nonsense, featuring the work of James Green; Dutch Flower Paintings, featuring works from the National Gallery and ‘Colour and Light: Scottish Colourists from the Fleming Collection’.
