Bats, Birds and Bowls

MONDAY

I went down to the bowling club in Rhuddlan this afternoon for a couple of practice games before tomorrow's league match. The seagull (pictured) took a keen interest in the yellow jack.

This evening we went on a three-hour "Bat Walk" at the Ddôl Uchaf Nature Reserve (North Wales Wildlife Trust).

The event started with a general introduction to Ddôl Uchaf and information about the different designs of bat boxes in use on the reserve. The licensed members of the Bat Group then examined the contents of some of the boxes and confirmed the presence of soprano pipistrelle bats and long-eared bats.

After sunset we were given bat detectors (see extra) which scanned the frequencies used by bats (18 - 120 kHz) and converted them into sounds audible by the human ear.
