Narnia Gas Lamp

Went to Malvern today to celebrate end of J and B's exams, and had a wonderful day, with a plethora of photos - TOO difficult to choose - between stunning views from the British Camp, Darwin's 10yr old daughter's grave, and M chatting to the lifesize statue of Elgar.

Decided to go with this one of the girls and the gas lamp that probably inspired the scene where Lucy enters Narnia through the wardrobe. CS Lewis went to boarding school in Malvern, and as he left the Priory by the front door, he would have gone through a structure much like a large wardrobe, to be greeted by this gas lamp. Imagine it lit and in the snow, as he would no doubt have seen it many a time...

There are around 100 of these 150 yr old (installed in 1856) gas lamps still working in Malvern, but recently upgraded to be more efficient and cheaper to maintain. Would love to have seen them lit, but instead came home to a delicious dinner, cooked for us by S and D.
