tempus fugit

Last night of the...

annual Jazz & Blues Festival in Fishguard and the joint was jumping, first to a great  local band then to balafon player and singer N’famady Kouyaté from Guinea (Conakry)  fresh from his success at Glastonbury where he was Winner of the  Emerging Talent Competition.

Extras show him and his remarkable percussion instrument, a sort of xylophone/marimba combination that uses gourds fixed underneath as resonators.  Settled in Cardiff now,  N'famady plays as a soloist and with a band,  weaving together multiple influences and involving other  performers with enormous verve and energy. The Jazz & Blues Festival struck lucky in booking him. This year is its 20 anniversary and it's all thanks to the couple who started it and have been instrumental in building it up into the popular and successful event it is now. At the end of the evening a bouquet was presented to Alice, who's just turned 70,  while her husband Paul paid tribute to her dedication over the years, much of which involves each morning sifting through the many applications from musicians and listening to all their sample pieces before making the final choice of  line-up.
Including last year when lightning struck their house and they had to live in pub and hotel accommodation for months while it was being rebuilt.
Every community needs inspirational troopers like them.
