We decided to go to Birkrigg but 5 minutes into the journey  we had to turn back as the road was closed. ( more roadworks) So we turned back and went to the Abbey.

For a change we parked by the Amphitheatre.  Its know as the amphitheatre  because of its shape but it is in fact where the stone for Furness Abbey was quarried way back in the 12 th century.

On the rare occasions when it snows it's a good place for sledging. I remember a very cold walk home one winter when we went sledging with my uncle and he lost the car keys. A week later when the snow thawed my dad went and found them . It was probably 1963 the year of the 'Big Freeze'.
Its years since we have had much snow in Furness.. it's usually melted within a day. Global warming or just the effect of sea air blowing in on 3 sides?

Today, however was much warmer . We decided to go up the path to the top and carry on over the hill . It's good that Fletch has the energy to climb up without any problem.. and good that we can too.
