Omens

As always, the first thing that we did in the morning was to look at the weather. We had long ago realised that we were characters in a book and that the author lazily used the meteorological conditions as a means of foreshadowing forthcoming events. None of us forgot the storm of last Winter which had presaged the tempestuous row between Nan and Peter.
Today we had mixed messages. The sky loured ominously but the sea was calm and alive with twinkling reflections that danced across the surface. It was hard to tell what was coming.
