Waiting

Tuesday night Leo had his hand kicked when playing footie and his thumb swelled up and looked like he might have dislocated or broken something.  He was in a fair bit of pain so we thought we would get it checked at the hospital.  As he was starting College on Thursday we thought it was a good plan to get it all sorted out that evening - bad move!

We got to the hospital at 9.30pm and finally left at 6.30am!  The good news was that Leo’s thumb wasn’t broken but we were all shattered.  When we headed in the wait was 4 hours which seemed bad but by the time we left the wait had gone up to 11 hours!  So although that wait was long, it was just as well we had headed in then and not left it until morning or we would have been there even longer.

It is sad to see things under so much pressure.  One poor woman came in after a fall and was sitting waiting to be seen after her x-rays. She deteriorated whilst in the waiting room and after a seizure she fell unconscious. When the nurse pressed the emergency buzzer it was impressive to see loads of people dashing in to whisk her away for treatment, but also so sad that she had been sitting there for so long whilst so unwell.

We were all shattered afterwards. I took Wednesday off so I could sleep away the morning.  I had to head back to the hospital with dad in the afternoon as he had a Cornea Clinic appointment. We were there for about an hour and a half which they kept apologising for but which seemed nothing to me after the 9 hour stint in A&E.

Across those visits I ended up paying just short of £20 for parking - that added insult to injury of all that waiting.

At least Leo was happy with the result.  His thumb still looks rather odd but the Dr said it will settle down with rest and elevation and he should be ok to play again in a couple of weeks as long as it looks settled and there is no further pain.  I guess it is all part of being a Goalkeeper! He was jokingly suggesting he would take up chess instead if he had done any major mischief.
