We moved into our house almost 18 years ago to the date, and one of the first things I remember were these magnificent Kniphofia red hot poker plants at the side of the house.

They are a week late in flowering this year. This one has sprung up from nowhere virtually overnight.

The Kniphofia genus is named after Johann Hieronymus Kniphof,[4] an 18th-century German physician and botanist.
