Looks can be deceptive.

They might look a fine bunch of eating apples, but the taste is really quite sharp and they are better when cooked with some added sugar. Quite why this is, I don't know as in the past the crop has always been tasty and it is known as a September Apple. . I suspect the cool wet months of July and August followed by a blisteringly hot September to date might have something to do with it
