Corgarff Castle

Corgarff Castle commands a spectacular location in Strathdon. It dates from the mid 1500s - the fortified home of the Forbeses of Corgarff. It was abandoned in the 1600s and derelict by the time the Marquis of Montrose occupied it in 1645, it was subsequently repaired. However, it was twice set on fire by the Jacobites to ensure that government forces could not occupy it. From the mid 1700s, following Culloden it became a varracks housing Redcoats who were hunting down Jacobite sympathisers and stamping out the illegal distilling and smuggling of whisky. Later an illegal still was housed in the castle.

The extra is of a reconstruction of the barrack room when it was occupied by Hanoverian troops.
