Where Sky Meets The Land

Stepping into History

Today we became officially English. We rambled, we sight saw, we read up on history and to top it off - we joined the English Heritage!
It has been a lovely day, we ventured up to Salisbury where we hada good wander around the Old Sarum - which is an ancient fortification, which has been modified into a mot and bailey more recently. It is now all just in ruins since the fort got deserted and the outside ring of stones where taken to build other structures.
There was a site of cobbled structures which shows the different areas which had been mapped out including the site of a Cathedral, palace and market area. It was here that the English heritage hooked us in with their history.
sneaky.
We then got called a 'young couple' which I have to say was weird, but nice and Pip liked the fact that he is considered young...HA.
We then had a mini sit and read up on the area and the other places we could visit now and try and get back the money we had just spent on our membership - we have earnt over a third back in just one day - pretty impressive!
We then went to see Stonehenge, which I have heard many stories about but never been to see. The different theories around the stones are extremely interesting including all the myths such as Merlin being the man who brought them there, or they were moved by giants, or that the Devil himself cam and picked up the stones and flew them over to the site where we see stone henge today, dropping a few along the way! The ideas that it is a calendar seem to have more historic evidence to back them up but I find the mystery that surrounds the stones fascinating. We then took a wander with some ice creams in hand up to a row of barrows which is where the dead were buried, and looked across the Salisbury planes.
We have now just got home and Pip is making me dinner whilst I find some quotes to finish off my essay which is due tomorrow!
I'm sad to leave but will be back here in a few days time.
Hope everyone has had a lovely weekend! Love G & P
