Marques de Pombal Square

This square and column was dedicated to the Marques de Pombal. He was the Prime Minister from 1750 - 1777 and was the driving force behind the reconstruction of Lisbon after the devastating 1755 earthquake.

The monument faces down the avenue of independence towards Baixa, the area rebuilt under his vision and guidance.

The statue was proposed in 1917 during the early days of the Portuguese republic but it was inaugurated in 1934.
