Hybrid Sapsucker, Del Monte Canyon, NV

I found this red-naped/red-breasted sapsucker hybrid tending to its chicks not ten meters from one of my later sample points this morning. The lighting in the middle of this aspen grove wasn't the best, but it was sufficient to capture the white facial stripes of a red-naped sapsucker combined with the more extensive red on the head and breast typical of a red-breasted sapsucker. The mate of this individual also turned out to be a hybrid, although its features more-closely resembled a red-breasted sapsucker.
