Secret ladies on the Corn Exchange roof

This was taken through a very dirty window, high up in the Corn Exchange where the photography group were shown where these ladies (see extras) used to hold up a glass roof.  It was bombed early in the war during a 6 hour blitz of Bristol City and was replaced with a lower roof leaving the ladies isolated from sight except from one passage under the eaves.  We were also shown the basement bomb shelter by the very enthusiastic ARP warden (well he was dressed as one and reminded me of the one in Dad's Army).  We learned and saw many things that he had found in the basement bomb shelter along with gas masks,  and other memorabilia; not least a replica poster saying KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON.  He told us this slogan, although it was printed during the start of the war,  did not see the light of day till the 1990's when it was discovered by a printer.  He wanted to use it but was told it was copyright - unfortunately for him someone in Europe (not affected by the copyright) got there first and flooded the market with it.  It was designed to be posted everywhere if Hitler managed to invade the country, which he didn't, thanks to the boys of the Battle of Britain.
