Berkeley

We travelled down the M5 to the small market town of Berkeley.  The place has two claims to fame insomuch as it has a castle, Berkeley Castle, and a museum which was our prime destination.   The museum was the house of Dr Jenner who lived from 1749 to 1823 and was a naturalist and pioneering scientist who introduced to the world the vaccination.  His work on Cowpox led eventually to the eradication of Smallpox throughout the world.  The extra is the summer house at the bottom of his garden which became the world's first vaccination clinic.  The main picture is his house.  The last time we were here the place was closed due to the COVID pandemic, a little ironic really!

The house is very interesting, containing a lot of original artefacts used by Jenner and the large garden, laid mainly to lawn, houses a large greenhouse and an extensive selection of exotic flowers and herbs.  There is an outhouse where he apparently brewed his own wine and beer.

All in all, well worth a visit.
