Diary of an Edinburgher

SA Day Thirteen

Did I mention bullfrogs? Yes! They are SO loud, and went on ALL NIGHT, stopping at dawn. We did not sleep well…

Up at 6am, and off on a morning drive. It was a lovely day, best weather we’ve had on our holiday.

There’s not much I like doing better than sitting in Land Rover having my bones shaken for hours, while being driven through the South African bush. Our group has been very unlucky with sightings, and if we find them, eg the lions, they are lying sleeping until we leave and the next vehicle comes in and gets all the action! The most exciting thing we saw today was a tortoise, stomping off quite quickly.

No, I jest. We saw loads of animals, but quite far away again. Elephants munching their way through the forest - on the other side of a gorge. Zebras miles away. Rhinos too, behind bushes. Giraffes were quite close. This safari park area, with several lodges, doesn’t allow off road, so you’re lucky if the animals happen to be nearby.

We stopped at a waterhole which was beside another lodge. Three big boulders were in it. Dad, mum and baby hippo. Allegedly. But we had a coffee and use of the lodge toilet, which was a bonus.

We had a bbq this evening, and the staff came on singing and dancing. All good fun.
