Benningbrough Hall

Woke to sunshine and it has been a lovely day. 20C.
Spent a very enjoyable morning at Benningbrough Hall.
The house and gardens are now owned by the by the National Trust.
Built in 1716 for John Bouchier 111 a York landowner to replace his family’s modest Elizabethan manor, which was built in 1556 by Sir Ralph on his inheritance of the estate.

The house was neglected prompting fears that it might have to be demolished. In 1916, however, a wealthy heiress, Enid Scudamore- Stanhope, Countess of Chesterfield, bought it and immediately set about its restoration, filling it with furnishings and paintings from her ancestral home, Holme Lacy in Herefordshire.

During the Second World War is was occupied by airman from the RAF, Royal Canadian Air Force, and Bomber Command.
Lady Chesterfield died in 1957 and in June 1958 it was acquired by the Nation Trust.

We stopped off at Helmsley on the way back. Had a walk round, and sat outside enjoying a cream tea. ( ham sandwich for MrC)

Back at the caravan enjoyed a cuppa, and now enjoying a g,ass of white wine and nibbles.

Very enjoyable day.
