The Hakatere

Cold, windy and beautiful. The stunning Hakatere.

We've made a foray up the rocky slope behind the old musterers hut (on the right at the base of the ridge) where we'll stay tonight. We'll continue along the ridge until we're above the hut, and spot a safe route down through the matagouri and loose rock.

No heating, basic bunks, a small table with a couple of benches to sit on. A cold stream and a long drop loo provide us with everything else we'll need. My idea of a good time and my mate agrees.

I expect to wear most of what I've carried with me to keep warm tonight. I'm impressed 2 young lads in their last year at school have tramped in for the night too.

I'm grateful that I get to do this.
