La vida de Annie

By Annie

Tortuga al revés.

I went out to feed the garden tortoises and found one on its back, waving all 4 legs wildly in an attempt to right itself. I think it had been trying to get up a step to hide under a shrub - one of them regularly does that, displacing a pile of empty pots in the process - but fell backwards. As I watched, a very small tortoise came up and tried to help, to no avail, but then 3 big bruisers appeared and together pushed it over onto its feet. I gave the chap a piece of apple by way of consolation, but one of its rescuers stole the apple and buggered off with it. For a species that traditionally lives a solitary life, the co-operation and helpfulness of the others was quite a revelation.
