Nome, Alaska

We have just boarded the plane to fly from Nome to Seattle but we had a fascinating couple of hours exploring Nome. It’s a real frontier town that started with a gold rush at the beginning of the 20th century.

We had a lovely chat in the supermarket (where we were warming up, it was zero C with a stiff wind) with a lady who described herself as half Eskimo half assorted European countries , about her grandmother who was removed, with the rest of her village, from Little Diomede when the US Military established a base there after WW2. The graveyard has several military graves of servicemen who died in Vietnam. Otherwise the town is a graveyard of trucks and ATVs which have seen better days.
