Winter approaches and the Ptarmigan …

… collect together in small flocks. I was lucky this morning and spent almost an hour observing a group of 12 Ptarmigan in different plumage states. You can see the red spot above the eye of the male here. Ideally I am hoping to get photos of these birds throughout the year now I have located them. Naturalists are worried that they will disappear from the Alps altogether with the current trend of global warming. The extra lady is so visible against the rocks in her white plumage, an eagle could easily pick her off. At 2,600m there should be some snow by now and there is nothing.
