Sleeping with Fishes

Awake to find that things have kicked off again in Gaza, perhaps intentionally on the fiftieth anniversary of the Yom Kippur war. Gruesome stuff, as ever, which will probably end badly for civilians everywhere, but mostly in Gaza. Still, a few young men got to punch the air atop a captured tank for their brief moment of glory.
Back to the Years, by one Annie Ernaux. Shockingly, I’d never heard of her, despite winning the Nobel prize for literature just last year, "for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory." It’s the SK’s book, a present from her old school chum, the intellectual.
Later (skipping HMFC’s throwing away of a 2-0 lead in the derby) it was Scotland v Ireland at rugger. A “must win” for the boys in blue. After 60 minutes, we’re 36-0 down. And everyone else in the bar is supporting Ireland. Stupid game anyway.
