An Avid Lensman

The Golden Cross

A poor day weather-wise and so a quick blip taken in St Thomas's church, Salisbury.

Waiting in now for delivery of the latest lens acquisition, a new Tamron 17-50mm with constant f2.8, a fast lens for use for music and bands (so expect a blip with it over the weekend) I got this one early.

This brass cross is on top of this brass bible holder and the background is a shiny brass plaque, catching the light, on the wall, behind. The longish lens (Sigma EX 70-200mm f2.8) allows both to be in the same image but it did take me several shots to realise the potential here.

Most would have settled for the initial open aperture shot as it threw the background out, totally. However, I stopped the lens down progressively, in half-stops, to see what the effect was. This at a moderate f6.7 allowed the background cross to become visible - and part of the overall image. I would urge others to experiment a little, similarly, where the image has potential and when there is time - ideal for macro and such still life's as the depth of field can really make such a difference.

The 'goldness' was emphasised by use of the camera with the white balance set at 'cloudy', which in effect, it actually was!

Thanks to all who zoomed my ghost truck time exposure blip of yesterday well up into the Spotlight - it's, as always, much appreciated!
